Seeking Transparency: A Letter to the Board of Human Rights Watch
The board of Human Rights Watch released a statement on February 18, abruptly announcing the departure of the Executive Director, Tirana Hassan. I’m writing because this sudden and confusing exit is undermining trust in HRW and threatens its ongoing existence just when the world needs it most. I care deeply about HRW’s mission and its staff, and, as a former board colleague, I ask you to give more insight into your decision.
Over the past five years, HRW has seen five iterations of executive leadership, a consistent series of senior staff departures, and internal staff turmoil. Despite this, the work of HRW’s brilliant staff continued.
But, in response to the vague implications in the recent press release, I see growing concern (from both inside and outside the organization) regarding Tirana’s departure – concern about an appearance of lack of accountability and transparency and potential violations of governance norms by the board. That breakdown in trust can only harm HRW and undermine its critical work.
Providing transparency about this decision is in the best interest of the organization and all it stands for. HRW needs to rebuild trust with the public and with its staff in order for its vital work – fighting for the most fundamental rights we all share – to continue. Our world is better with a strong HRW in it. Please help to further HRW’s aims by accounting for the process and the foundation of the board’s decision.
With respect,
Susan
